Autograph Letter Signed, “Alonzo Freeman”, 11th New York Cavalry, POW at Doyal’s Plantation, Louisiana, 3p. octavo, Capital, Scotts 900 Cav. October 22, 1863, with cover addressed to his cousin in NYC, it reads in part: “...Most of the regiment are at Edward’s Ferry on picket duty. Our Surgeon is at New York on furlough....We have a new assistant surgeon Dr. Campbell from Toronto Canada West....almost every evening we have a game of chess together...There has been considerable excitement in Washington during the last week on account of General Mead’s retreat and all kinds of rumors were afloat concerning it. I see that General Rosecranz has been removed I wonder what that means. We hear very little from Charleston lately, I should think that Gilmore was never going to make an attempt to do so...received a letter from Wally Squier...who belonged to Co. A 1st New Jersey...he says that the regiment has been in thirteen battles and that the regiment now numbers only two hundred and ninety four men. I think they have done their share of fighting...” VG.
