A rare war-date Union Bucktail's letter, 3 1/2pp. 8vo., written, on patriotic stationery, by Pvt. Horace G. Babcock, Co. I, 42nd Penn. Vols. (13th Penn. Reserves Bucktails), [died as POW 2/20/65 Salisbury, N. C.], "Camp Pierpont, Va., Oct. 11, [1861]," in part: "…went about six miles encamped in the woods laid down on our knapsacks with our guns by our sides ready in case of an attack for we are in the enemy's country…the enemy is within two or three miles of here. They have a number of masked batteries…the enemy were a drilling here when our United States Cavalry came in sight…at their approach they fled like miserable cowards…I don't believe there is many boys in our regiment that will act the part of a coward…all such soldiers are a disgrace to the country and especially the regiment they belong to and the town they represent…we are detached from the second brigade that is General McCall's…we had the honor of seeing General McLellon [McClellan] and staff today. He [??] our camp…our camp…[is] in a field close by a farm house that was vacated…they say he is an officer in the rebel army. Others say he is a good union man. Be that as it may he has left his household furniture and crops…I should judge he was quite wealthy…but now…he can not be worth much…he was a slave owner and that species of property is worth nothing now. Our officers have taken possession of the house. They stay in one part…and use a part of it for a hospital…". VG
