A rare war-date Union Bucktail's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written, on patriotic stationery, by Pvt. Horace G. Babcock, Co. I, 42nd Penn. Vols. (13th Penn. Reserves Bucktails), [died as POW 2/20/65 Salisbury, N. C.], "[Camp] Pierpont, Va., Nov. 27, 1861," in part: "…about seven hundred of the first Penna. Cavalry went out three miles beyond Dranseville at the very same place that we camped when we went out…they took thirteen prisoners. One of them is at our hospital…he is wounded very bad…the others just went past here going to Gen. McCall's headquarters. They were dressed in citizen's cloths and poor at that. I don't know how many was killed and taken prisoners. Of our men…none was killed but three [were] wounded…the rebel prisoner…died last night of his wounds, also one of our men that was wounded…our colonel [future Brig. Gen. George D. Bayard KIA Fredericksburg] of the cavalry…was wounded three times but not very bad. One of the rebel prisoners was a captain another a lieutenant and the rest high privates…". VG
