A rare war-date Union Bucktail's battle letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Horace G. Babcock, Co. I, 42nd Penn. Vols. (13th Penn. Reserves Bucktails), [died as POW 2/20/65 Salisbury, N. C.], "[Camp] Pierpont, Dec. 20, [1861]," in part: "…you said you received the picture that I sent…when I come back I could have a squint at it if I ever should be so fortunate as to see that time…I thought my chances rather slim last Friday about the time I was in the brick house and the cannon balls flying around and against the house…one…hit the house where I stood loading my gun…the ball struck the house so softly. I stood a foot from the wall…as it was it knocked the brick against me and soiled my new coat some, but I did not mind that…". VG.
