A good war-date Union soldier's battle letter, 2pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Lewis R. Robinson [WIA Bethesda Church, Va., 5/30/64], Co. A, 1st Pennsylvania Reserve Corps (30th Penn. Vols.), Camp near Rappahannock [Va.], Dec. 4, [actually Jan. 4, 1863], in part: "Since I last wrote…we have had a very hard time. We cross the river last Thursday and on Saturday we opened the fight. Before we got engaged with the rest we laid out in an open field and the rebs had a cross fire on us with their artillery…they killed one man out of Company C by the name of Webb and wounded three others…when we crossed the road the top of my cap was raised up by the wind of a shell and when I got up on the bank another shell cut the limb off of a pine tree right above my head and knocked me back against the tree and the limb come all over me. I thought my last moments had come…I got straightened out and I went to the regiment and we all dropped down in the mud and let the artillery have a chance to fire. After laying down about 1/2 hour we started and we drove the rebs 1/2 mile beyond the railroad…we got on the hill when they commenced to flank us right and left…we had to fall back…no reinforcements came to us…they made us break and run…through the woods which was full of brush…oh how many of our brave Reserves fell in [those] woods. One of our Company died of his wounds. His name was Abraham Tinsley…there was another shot along side of me…his name was Joe Pratt [died Christmas day 1862] of West Chester and a good soldier…Joe Darlington was wounded and three others are missing…John Law had his blanket cut on his shoulder but it did not hurt him. Thank God I was not struck…". VG.
