A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Lewis R. Robinson [WIA Bethesda Church, Va., 5/30/64], Co. A, 1st Pennsylvania Reserve Corps (30th Penn. Vols.), Camp White Oak Church, [Va.], Jan. 26, 63, in part: "…perhaps you would like to hear about this last strategic move that Yank Burnsides made…the day we started I was out on picket…before daylight we was taken off and told to get to camp as quick as we could which we did…I routed up the boys that I bunk with there name is Thomas McCann [We are selling a letter from him in this sale.] & John Law and we got our breakfast...the orders came to pack up and be ready to start at a moments notice…as we got our houses torn down it commenced to rain. We commenced to move at twelve o'clock and we marched about eight miles the first day. We camped and I put up my tent…and went to bed. The next day we started in mud knee deep and our knapsacks…weighed a ton…we traveled about five miles and they stuck us in a place that the man [who] owned the place did not know of and there they kept us for two days. All along the road artillery, pontoons and wagons was stuck hub deep…we could not get any rations and we had to move back to our old camp. It seemed like going home to look on our old hole once more. The rebs had painted on a board opposite Falmouth, "Burnside and his army stuck in the mud." It was a good joke on spoor dismal brutes for we are treated as such and I commenced to think that we are nothing more than a brute…our furnace is smoking. It has lost the way to the chimney and is coming out in the tent. It is like a smokehouse. There is no danger of me spoiling if I stay in here…five minutes longer…Lewis R. Robinson Brandywine Guards, 1st Reg. Infantry, P. R. V. C., Washington, D. C. care of Capt. Hooton…". The original stamped transmittal cover is included. VG
