A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. James B. Sterling, Co. E, 7th Conn. Vols., [MWIA Olustee, Florida, 2/20/64], Beaufort, S. C., Dec. 22, 1862, in part:"…I am now on picket 10 miles from the city and have got to stay 10 days then we will be relieved. We are now so near the other pickets…we can talk with them. They wanted to have us come over to them. There is a river between us so that we cannot get together without a boat. they wanted some tobacco. I told them that if they would come over I would give them some…they wanted to know if I had some thing good…I had some salt junk and coffee…[that] they were welcome to…they said they would come over by and by…I told them that I would keep the coffee hot. They said never mind that they liked cold coffee…I am now sitting in the door of a barn upstairs in the gabble…writing on my portfolio. The sun shines very pleasant and there is nothing to disturb me. I have to go on picket tonight…". VG.
