A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 1p. folio, written by Pvt. James B. Sterling, Co. E, 7th Conn. Vols., [MWIA Olustee, Florida, 2/20/64], Beaufort, S. C., Nov. 21, 1862, in part: "…General Hunter has returned here and I doubt if there will be any more fighting here…for he thinks more of the nigers than he does of his country for he never did anything when he was here before…we have every reason to think…he will pursue the same old course as before. There has…to [be] something [done] to stop this war besides sit down and plan for the comfort of nigers rather than…soldiers. We were in hopes that we had got rid of him but he comes back like an old pestilence. Blast his infernal old head. We had rather see the old one himself rather than General Hunter for he does no good…he uses the niger better than the white man and gives them the soft bread and gives us the hard bread or Pilot Bread as it is commonly known. We liked Gen. Mitchel [Ormsby M. Mitchell] for the reason [that] after he had had us doing things, he gave us time to rest and give us enough to eat…now we have got to get along as [best] we can for we have no general who cares only…enough to keep us alive…". The original transmittal cover is included. Overall VG.
