A great war-date Union chairman's letter, 2pp. 4to., on multi-colored Hartford City Guards stationery, addressed to Connecticut Governor William A. Buckingham, Hartford, CT, April 12, 1862 inviting him to the funeral of Capt. Edwin Lee who was killed during the battle of New Bern, N. C., in part: "The Hartford City Guard having learned with deep regret the death of their late fellow…comrade Capt. Edwin R. Lee 11th Regt. Conn. Vols. have voted "that upon the arrival of the body in the City it is [to] be taken in charge by them and conveyed to its final resting place with full military honors." They would most respectfully invite your excellency and staff to join…them on that occasion in paying respect to another of Connecticut's gallant sons whose life was given for the cause of "Union and Liberty." Signed by Charles H. Prentice as chairman for the committee of arrangement for the funeral of Capt. Lee. Near fine.
