A good war-date Union soldiers battle letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Sgt. Ephraim Bender (WIA Second Bull Run, Va., 8/29/62, wounded in left foot), Co. K, 100th Penn. (Roundheads) Vols.,James Island, S. C., June 28, 1862, concerning the battle of Secessionville, S. C., June 16, 1862, in part: "…we have had a hot time here since I last rote. Thare has been white a number killed. Our regiment had ten killed and twenty wounded, seven missing…the colonel sent me back to Beaufort to bring the…baggage…thare was a great many killed in some of the regiments. Our loss was heavy…al the thing was badly managed. It was commanded by General Benam…he will never command another fight…we are planting siege guns now. That is the only way we can do anything with them. They have a heavy fort. I was…in sight of it yesterday. They are making tin larger. We are planting guns every day. They bother us some throwing shells at us. They threw a few last night. They killed one of our men and wounded one or two. Our batteries will be ready in a few days…we can see fort Sumter plan from this place and we can see the steeples on the churches in Charleston…thare was one man killed on our company. His name was Thomas Gorman…our forces here is about ten or twelve thousand strong…". Bender's poor grammar and some spelling has been corrected aid flow of transcription.
