A good war-date Union soldier's battle letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Andrew H. Frame, Co. A, 35th Mass. Vols., "Camp near Falmouth or Fredericksburg , Va., Dec. 19, 1862," to his friend Mary Lucy Tenney of Byfield, Mass., in part: "…leaves me in good spirit after a good smart battle and come out without a scratch. Thanks be to god. He spared my life. This battle was one of the greatest slaughter for a little while…it was a great blunder to make charge upon those rifle pits…after we got up there we [did] not see any one. The bullets came through our ranks very but we could not see the sons of sea cooks [Rebels.] They were hit [hid] in there [their] rifle pits. We have lost 20 men to thare one…the army retreated across the river in good shape and good spirit. That city is in…ruin, very large city too [with] about 16,000 habitants in it. We put three thousand shells in that city. Our boys would bring out some very nice feather beds and lay it right down on the mud…I got tobacco to last six weeks. When we open upon the Rebels last Thursday. We commenced with 240…batteries and from the commencement to the last we could not hear ourselves speak…if any of the soldiers ever return home…I shall be one. I always keep my eyes open when I have to meet the Rebels…we may whip them out of one place…we got to following them…if we give them 2 weeks they will fortify themselves so to knock the will out of us…if we do whip them they will not stay whipped. It is better to coax a man then to drive him…I often hear the people talk about the Sunny South. I do not see any thing very sunny about it. I can't see anything…but Negroes and what they call white folks [and] they are coffee colored and very homely set with that…". Also included is the original "DUE 3" transmittal cover, endorsed by Chaplain Henry Miller [bvt. major and chaplain of the 36th USCT], and a small note addressed to Lucy concerning a misunderstanding about a shirt. Overall VG.
