War-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by William H. Hibbard [DOD at Baton Rouge, 6/25/63], Co. B, 160th New York Vols., Thibodeaux, [La.], Camp Stevens, Jan. 10, 1863, in part: "…the 160 has moved about 70 miles above Camp Carrolton within a mile of Thibodeaux. There [is] a rebel army not a great way from us. We expect a turn with them every day…let them come we will try them a full. We are 18000 strong…2 regiments of heavy artillery, 2 regiments of cavalry. This regiment is called General Bank's reserve…the rebels left field of sugar cain that never was harvested. The rebels was driven off from their plantations. I was talking with a niger. He said his massa told him dat de yankes was cuming to kill all de black folks…last night…it thundered off at a distance. Some of the boys [thought] that the enemy was a cuming…". VG
