War-date Union soldier's letter, 3 1/2pp. 8vo., written by William H. Hibbard [DOD at Baton Rouge, 6/25/63], Co. B, 160th New York Vols., Thibodeaux, [La.], Jan. 19, 1863, in part: "…our regiment has been in one battle, killed 2, wounded not any in our company…they drove the rebels & took 40 prisoners. The rebels blew up the gunboat Cotton. It was a splendid boat. It cost 120,000 dollars. It is quite a loss for the rebels. The prisoners look hard. Some of them had on women's petticoats & straw hats…a good many of them barefooted. They don't have nothing but Indian pudding & molasses to eat. Our boys killed their cattle & sheep…burnt several houses & sugar houses [?] looking blacks as their is hear they beat the devil. I hate the sight of them. I hope when this war is over they will [?] the nigs. I had as…shoot one of them as to look at them. I hope they will never get north for they don't look fit to be whare there is white folks…".
