War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by William H. Hibbard [DOD at Baton Rouge, 6/25/63], Co. B, 160th New York Vols., Brashear City, [La.], Feb. 6, 1863, in part: "…I hope this black war will soon be over…I hope if our forces is able to take Charleston & Vicksburg it will put a stop to this war but they anti got them…yet…if the nigors are a going to be set free & go whare they are a minto. I hope the war will never close. I have seen enough of nigors since I cum down in this miserable state…if a private…had a little privilege it wod be a little better but he is cept down like a dog. If fighting was allowed in camp I would whip 3 or 4 officers before night[fall]…I hope I shall meat sum of them when I get free…4 out of our regiment run away& went into the rebel army. I wouldn't blame them if they should all go…". The original transmittal cover is included. VG
