War-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by William H. Hibbard [DOD at Baton Rouge, 6/25/63], Co. B, 160th New York Vols., Brashear City, [La.], Feb. 10, 1863, in part: "…this city is like all the rest…I have seen since I have been South, 2 houses & a thousand nigors. This regiment is camped right close to the river…we can see the rebels pass up & down on the other side of the river. The pickets fire across the river at each other but it don't amount to much…one of the soldiers [Pvt. Isaac Vandermiller, 29 years-old, drowned in the Atchafalaya River Feb. 9, 1863] in our regiment got discouraged & jumped into the river & drowned. What a fool he was…it is no use being down hearted for we are to work for Uncle Sam['s] big pay…all will get rich. Aint I glad I am a soldier…13 dollars a month. That will all most buy my tobacco. There is 4 gun boats hear…Dear honey keep up good courage for…I keep a stiff upper lip…our picket guard that went out this morning took a rebel prisoner. They brought him through the camp while I was writing…". The original stamped transmittal cover and two dried leaves are included. VG
