War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by William H. Hibbard [DOD at Baton Rouge, 6/25/63], Co. B, 160th New York Vols., Brashear City, [La.], Feb. 15, 1863, in part: "…I sent my washing out & the black devil never fetched them back. I don't think I shall send…more washing out. The 75 regiment took 2 rebel prisoners, 2 horses & the rebels came down last night with a flag of truce & told the head m[an] here if they didn't give them prisoners up they would shell us out. They didn't give them up & I don't think they can shell us out. We are ready for them. Let them come. There is 3 gun boats here & a heavy battery [1st Indiana Heavy Artillery], 4 thousand infantry & if they will wait a few days the fort will be done with 8 large guns…all I have seen to guard on the river is flood wood & alligators…". The original stamped transmittal cover is included. VG
