B, 160th New York Vols., Brashear City, [La.], Feb. 27, 1863, in part: "…there is 5000 infantry here, 3 companies of cavalry, 3 batteries with 18 large guns, 3 gunboats. There was 4 gun boats but one met with an accident & sunk. We expect 2 more gun boats & 2 mortar boats & more infantry…from New Orleans…the rebels are 20,000 strong where we expect to go. There is a large force of Union soldiers on the other side of the Miss. & we are going to pitch into them on both sides…the pickets was a firing at one & an another all day the 26th up the river…them soldiers that we…taken have [been] returned. The reason they was gone so long the run run onto a stump & couldn't get off. The boat [was] stuck there 24 hours…I let a niger have my washing Thursday & he got them washed & sum other soldier come & lied to him…he gave him…my cloths…the niger came around at night with some raged cloths & said they was mine. I told him he lied. I pitched at him. I told him I would take his heart out & show it to him. I scared the nig…he sent to New Orleans & bot sum new cloths…I lost my cloths once before. I let a nig have them to wash & he left with the cloths & all. I think just enough of a nig [as] to shoot every one…I hope you will send me them Factory shirts…".
