War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by William H. Hibbard [DOD at Baton Rouge, 6/25/63], Co. B, 160th New York Vols., Brashear City, [La.], Mar. 3, 1863, in part: "…my hips & arms are lame all the time…I went to the doctor once & he told me to wash my back in salt & water. I told him to go to hell & left…Clark Heth is dead. He died the first of Feb. It was a hard sight to see him buried. It was all Jack Parsons & I could do to hold the coffin down under the water…until they got dirt enough on to hold it down. I never want to do such a thing again…3 soldiers [one was Lester Dixon] left our regiment & went over into the rebel army. They left March the 2nd. If they get caught they had better prepare for old hemp…we lost a splendid gun boat. She met with an accident & tried to get back to the city but sunk…5 sailors went down with her…Wm. H. Hib…right soon. Direct to New Orleans Company B, 160 N. Y. S. Vol. General Banks Division…". The original stamped transmittal cover is included. VG
