War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by William H. Hibbard [DOD at Baton Rouge, 6/25/63], Co. B, 160th New York Vols., Bio Beth, [Bayou Boeuf, La.], Mar. 24, 1863, in part: "…we…fell back 9 miles from Brashear City…the rebels was a working a round us & burn the railroad bridge & cut us off from supplies…General Banks was up here yesterday…he is a going to send on reinforcements…we are camped now in a sugar cane field…the mud in ankle deep…this regiment has spooned 2 or 3 houses for floors [for] their tents. I was in one house and torn the buttery to pieces& took the shelves for a floor. They made a great floor. Some of the houses has got beautiful furniture in sofa chairs, marble top tables. The rebs was driven away in such a hurry they hadn't time to move their things. I saw a lounge just like yours. It made me think of home. I went & took a seat on it…won of the captains tuck it & put it in his tent…". The original stamped transmittal cover is included. VG
