B, 160th New York Vols., Ope lousas, [La.], May 4, 1863, in part: "…we get a chance to rite on a march. We have stopped for 3 or 4 days to rest. We shall soon have to march agin. We have whipped the rebels 3 times on our march, tuck 2000 prisoners, lots a mules & horses, 100 bale of cotton, 6 cannon, lots of small arms. The rebels burnt a good deal on their retreat…we shall be fighting more or less for 2 or 3 months to come…it looks rather dark yet…I am afraid that Charleston & Vicksburg will be a tough job…we shall go around by Port Hudson…we have got rite in the rebel country & we must fight it out…we have cut off the rebel supplies to Vicksburg. This was the main place for supplies. The folks in this country was pretty hard up…they live better now since the army come through…when dinner time was. How the poor came around us to get a cup of coffee & a cracker. When we was on the march how the black folk would run out & holler "O de lord, O de lord. I glad I'd glad de Yankees had cum." Damn black people I could shot every damn nig I meat. If they wod allow me to. I am a democrat & damn the black republicans. I hope the slaves will never be free. I wish I had known as much at home as I don't know I…would have been a soldier. Damn the nigars & damn the man that sticks up for them…". The original stamped transmittal cover is included. VG
