A sad war-date Union soldier's sympathy letter, 2pp. 4to., written by Pvt. Charles A. Loud, Co. F, 3rd Mass. Cavalry, Baton Rouge, July 31, 1863 to the widow of Pvt. William H. Hibbard concerning her husband's death, in part: "…I can sympathize with you very much…he died for his country. He was a good man. You wish to know if you could get his remains…it would be impossible…he had nothing with him. He said nothing of my knowing about home. He had no thought of dying. I was with him until his death. Just before he died I laid down and in a few moments one of his friends told me he was daed…I got up and laid him out and help[ed] put him in his coffin. He was buried by soldiers in Baton Rouge. It would be impossible to get his body home. I don't know how long he was in the hospital for he was there when I come. He had the chronick Dyruea. I got him things he could eat…and done all in my power to comfort him…while he was sick…thair was to men yes three men from his company and they were Cathericks. His captain was not thare. He was at Port Hudson…I believe that the Regt is at Port Hudson…". VG The original stamped transmittal cover, endorsed by Capt. Amos Henfield, 3rd Mass. Cavalry, is included. VG
