War-date Union soldier's letter, 3 1/2pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Ephraim W. Frost [POW Winchester, Va., 6/13/63; WIA Piedmont, Va., 6/05/64 & DOD 1/15/65], Co. I, 116th Ohio Vols., [n. p. but Gallipolis, Ohio], Oct. 1, 1862, in part: "…we heard that the pickets was driven in up to the pint [point] yesterday…I was on guard up to town…and yesterday we had some fun up thare…6 of the 40th regt…got on a bust, They drinked all the cider they wanted and the man wanted them to pay for it…they would not…and he told them that it was a mean trick and they busted his barrel in and took his apples and his melons and thrower them at him and…took his boy out of the wagon and stomped him a little. They got after them to take them to the guard house but they said that we had no rite to take them…they tore around and threatened to nock our brains out but they got away from us and made tracks for their camp…I got my likeness taken today…we have got our traps…clothes and caps…and are ready for a tramp…".
