War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 4to., written by Pvt. Ephraim W. Frost [POW Winchester, Va., 6/13/63; WIA Piedmont, Va., 6/05/64 & DOD 1/15/65], Co. I, 116th Ohio Vols., "in camp near Martinsburg, Va., Oct. 21, [1863]," in part: "…thare was a little skirmish out at Berryville last Sunday and we could hear the cannonading…very plain…we looked for the Jonies to come here ad we tore all up and got ready for them…the 18 Connecticut paroled men…refused to take any guns and we were called up in line and they were all drawer up…and Col. Pearce told our Major Morris that he mite drill us or do what he was a mind to…Col. Pearce talked to them and they thought that they had better nock under and take their arms and have no more fuss about it…Co. E of our regt too 37 of Mosby's guerrillas last week including one Capt and one Lieut. They are out on the railroad and the secesh were trying to get into the railroad to burn a bridge between here and Cumberland but Co. E were too many for them. There was one secesh shot and ! wounded…". VG
