Autograph Letter Signed, Adam F. Carpenter, Sgt. 142nd New York Infantry, 3p. quarto, pencil, Camp Near Williamsburg, June 16, 1863, and reads in part: “... have been scouring the coutnry every day ...in every direction but have not seen any body of Rebs we have taken some few stragglers. We have been up the Pennisula opposite to West Point and returned to this camp, we are about 4,000 strong Infantry, Artillery, & Cavalry we came to the camp last evening and three companies of our Regt. were sent out on Picket where we are now & where we shall remain till tomorrow morning......we shall be able to march on to Richmond if there is any chance for making a good show...General Porters Brigade is about 12 miles in advance of us to the Northwest near the Chicahomeny nearly all the men capable of bearing arms are gone from here...no men left excpet Old men & negroes, there are plenty of widows or those that claim to be so they not wishing to have it known that their husbands are in the Rebel Army but we have taken some of them and they look pretty hard up...” with integral leaf addressed to his wife.
