War-date Union soldier's letter, 2pp. 4to., written by Pvt. Ephraim W. Frost [POW Winchester, Va., 6/13/63; WIA Piedmont, Va., 6/05/64 & DOD 1/15/65], Co. I, 116th Ohio Vols., Romney, (West) Va., Jan. 13, 1863, in part: "…we left Moorefield last saturday and it snowed all day…we traveled till after dark and camped…there was four hundred secesh in Moorefield before we got out of hearing of the town. There [was] 2 or 3 men shot or taken prisoner there…we heard that Vicksburg was taken after a hard fight and heavy loss…and also Fredericksburg was taken…tell Mike and Courtney that they will have to spread themselves or they will not catch them red headed possums they are a hunting…".
