War-date Union soldier's letter, 2pp. 4to., written by Pvt. Ephraim W. Frost [POW Winchester, Va., 6/13/63; WIA Piedmont, Va., 6/05/64 & DOD 1/15/65], Co. I, 116th Ohio Vols., Romney, (West) Va., Jan. 20, 1863, in part: "…we hant any mail here for five days…they say that the secesh captured it last saturday…when we was a coming from Moorefield the doctor let some damned nigers ride in the ambulance and some of the sick boys had to walk in the storm. He aint fit to doctor a sick dog…there is some men here that aint fit for duty…and he wont give them a discharge until they are discharged to the boneyard…tell Harris to spread himself and if he hears anybody hollering for Jeff Davis to drap him like a beaf…for there hant any Union men that will do it. We heard that there was great deal of excitement thare between the two political parties. I hope they wont get to quarreling about it…if they do they will be sorry for it for they don't know…how the country looks where there has been an army threw. The Jonnies really take every thing before them chickens, pigs, turkeys and railes and hay…everything that they can eat or burn and feed their horses…it takes a great deal to keep wagons with 6 horses to each…this is the poorest country that I every saw…direct your letter to the second brigade of the Cheat Mountain division…".
