Pair of war-date Union soldier's letters, totaling 5pp. 4to. & oblong 8vo., written by Pvt. Ephraim W. Frost [POW Winchester, Va., 6/13/63; WIA Piedmont, Va., 6/05/64 & DOD 1/15/65], Co. I, 116th Ohio Vols., Romney, (West) Va., Jan. 23, 1863, in part: "…the boys are all rite…they have gone out to shoot off their guns. Our mail was captured last saturday…the secesh have captured about 30 of our men…and our men take once in a while one or two of them. They brought in 2 one day this week and paroled them and let them go. There is a few cavalry here at present…[Feb. 2]…we heard that the 92 had gone south and left the Kanaway Vally…the general belief here [is] that the war will wind up pretty shortly and I hope that it will for it is a hard looking thing to see towns and farms used up as they are threw here. Let alone what men's lives are lost which is worst than all the rest but I hope that the[y] wont settle it unless they do it up rite…". VG
