War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. oblong 8vo., written by Pvt. Ephraim W. Frost [POW Winchester, Va., 6/13/63; WIA Piedmont, Va., 6/05/64 & DOD 1/15/65], Co. I, 116th Ohio Vols., Romney, (West) Va., Mar. 11, 1863, in part: "…thare is 2 Regt come here last sunday…it is supposed that Stonewall Jackson is going to attack Winchester…he is expected thare everyday…Joshua Safread is gaining slowly. The pickets got one bushwhacker last nite. They are getting pretty bold now. The[y] look fore horse team that was out after wood and sent their best respects to [Col. James] Washburn for his horses…Bradley [P. Barrows, POW Bunker Hill, Va., 6/13/63 & WIA Piedmont, Va., 6/5/64] is rioting to his wife. He is all regular. He has [had] some pretty hard arguments…he will have his one way and thare is no convincing him…it takes money to buy whiskey and it cannot be got for that which I think is a good thing. The old Sutler got the biggest part of some of the boys money. The pay master asked one of them if he was in partners with the sutler and he said yes and the pay master told him that he owed him three dollars…". VG
