War-date Union soldier's (partial) letter, 4pp. 4to., written by Corp. George P. Jarvis [WIA Perryville, Ky., Oct. 8, 1862], Co. C, 3rd Ohio Vols., Murfreesboro, Tenn., June 17, 1863, in part: "…yesterday we had a Corps drill…passed off very pleasantly…the whole Corps of Gen. Thomas was out and the front line when formed was more than a mile long and so many thousand men all moving at once can not fail to look grand. We see sights here…that would surprise and delight you but with us there is very little pleasure in it. we know too well the cost of such a show…we are now in Gen. Negley's Division having left Rousseau's for my post…Gen. Negley is a fine officer and is liked by every one…Col. Grosvenor is very kind to me…he treats me like a father would…he told Mr. Censsier the sutler to let me have anything I wanted and to consider him responsible…it seems that I was rather unfortunate in not being captured with the balance of the Regt., but I shall not cry about it. Going home at the price of being a prisoner…would not pay…you see my prediction in regard to Vallandigham being a candidate for the Governorship of Ohio…is fulfilled…will he be elected…the ballot box alone can tell…if the people of Ohio allow him to be elected I can do nothing else than disown the state. We will do all in our power here to prevent such a catastrophe…don't for Gad's sake allow him to be elected. Tell every body that I don't want the devil to rule Ohio…we don't want peace at the price that they would have it…we are not so d_n poor as to wish to purchase peace at the price of our own and our country's honor…let the Copperheaded, white livered, black hearted and hell deserving traitors at home beware. They are…only prolonging the war by giving their colleagues, Southern traitors room for a hope…". The original "DUE 3" transmittal cover, endorsed by Capt. James S. Wilson 3rd Ohio, brevet Lieut. Col. for Bentonville, N. C. in 1865, is included. Overall VG
