War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 4to., written by Corp. George P. Jarvis [WIA Perryville, Ky., Oct. 8, 1862], Co. C, 3rd Ohio Vols., "Camp in Sequatchee Valley, Tenn., Oct. 20, 1863, in part: "I arrived…after a most disagreeable march of two days. It was raining when we left Chattanooga and continued to do so until we arrived at the Regt. The road over the mountain was a very bad one and the heavy rain did not…help the matter…at one time we were so high up that we could look down on the clouds below. While it was raining torrents in the valley…above us was all clear and a bright sun shining…combining to make beautiful sight. The election went off all right at Chattanooga. The 92 Ohio gave Mr. Vallandigham one vote. The 36th Ohio gave him four and the 3rd Ohio gave him 15…[all] of them…has had two or three thrashings since…The one who voted for Val-in the 92 was a sergeant in Capt. Grosvenor's company…a few days before the election a man in the 11 Ohio made his brags that [he] would vote for Val-and he would like to see the man who would prevent him…a rope was procured and the gentleman was suspended to the limb of a convenient apple tree, but as ill luck would have it before he was entirely dead the limb broke and let him down…before they could get the rope over another limb the officer of the guard came up with a file of men and put a stop to the proceedings …we are repairing the wagon road from Bridgeport to Chattanooga …". Minor stains, else VG.
