War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 4to., written by Qtr. Master Sgt. George P. Jarvis [WIA Perryville, Ky., Oct. 8, 1862], 18th Ohio Vols., Chattanooga, Tenn., May 22, [1864], in part: "…John Brough…is a big pill to see through…when you came to simmer him down and extract the worth out of him you will find that you have a devilish small pill…he would all turn to vapor. I will admit I voted for him last fall…I would do so again under the same circumstances. It is better to have a wooden governor than a traitor but as long as there is anything but a traitor running against him he will never get another vote of mine…I wish they would keep this Regt in the field about a year longer. I would like to see some of the infernal conscripts and bounty jumpers turned down. The Regt does not get along very well…being composed of five different old Regts and then filled up with the "Rag tag and bob tail." of the north. It makes a conglomeration very hard to amalgamize. Nothing…but hard field duty will do it. If we could get into a fight…and get about half of them killed off it would go a great way toward taming them, especially the dead ones…". VG
