A great war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 4to., written, on finely illustrated Capitol of Washington, D. C. stationery, by Pvt. Joseph P. Baker, Co. F, 57th Penn. Vols. [POW Gettysburg, 7/ 2/63 then died of disease Andersonville, 5/12/64, grave #1046], Washington, D. C., Feb. 3, 1862 addressed to his mother, in part: "…I was down to the city on Saturday and visited most of the public buildings. I was at the 'White House' but did not see 'Long Abe.' At the Patent office I saw all kinds of patents I also saw the coat which Gen. Jackson wore at the battle of New Orleans and the coat, vest and breeches which Washington wore when he resigned his commission in 1783…I also saw the cane which Franklin willed to Washington…we are still on this side of the Potomac…the engraving on the opposite will give you some idea of the great city near which we are encamped…if Baltimore had as many public buildings…it would be far ahead of it…". The stationery Baker used was engaged and published by C. Bohn, Pennsylvania Ave, Washington in 1858. Also included is a map of the District of Columbia with the caption which reads, in full: "All that portion lying south of the Potomac was ceded back to the State of Virginia by act of Congress Feb. 3d 1846." Also included is the original DUE 3 "Union" series patriotic cover endorsed by Lt. Jerome R. Lyons [WIA Spotsylvania Court House, Va., 5/12/64]. Minor fold wear, else VG.
