Autograph Letter Signed, “James S. Hyde” 137th New York Infantry, 2p. folio, July 22, 1863, Snickersville, Virginia, with cover addressed to his mother, it reads in part: “...it is reported that there is quite a force of rebs on the other side of the Shenandoah river, which is but a few miles. The mountains between here and there, are full of guerillas, nearly every man that lives around here belongs to this band Moseby is their leader, I suppose before thi the draft has been made in rome Co....Capt. Stoddard with several other officers and men are going home to get the conscripts...Our Brigade of five regiments is but little larger now then one regiment was...At the same time Isend this letter, I will send a paper [not present] with a list of the killed, wounded, & missing of our Division, you may have hada list in some other paper...While we were in Maryland and Pennsylvania, the boys would not take anything, without paying for it, but as soon as they got into Virginia again they were worse than ever. They would go to a house to buy bread or butter and when they got it into their hands, they would say it was paid for and walk off...” Much more on pillaging. VG.
