War-date Union artilleryman's letter, 3pp. 4to., written by "Brevet" Sergeant John Hunter Battery G, 4th United States Light Artillery, "Position opposite Fredericksburg, Va., March 11, 1863," in part: "…I was suddenly detailed as Sergeant Major for the Head Qrs. of the Arty. Reserve…after doing Segt Major's duty…I was arrested and sent…to my battery…arriving there I was immediately released and placed in charge of a detachment as chief of piece…last night we had information of a contemplated raid of the enemy across the river for the purpose of spiking our battery…we set a trap (loaded with canister) for them…there was a boat crossed…a little below us with fifteen rebels who were all captured. We are ready for them again tonight-our pieces being withdrawn about 80 yards and ready to rake them as they enter our camp…I have a corporal (gunner) and 22 privates in my detachment…we ought to gain a pretty good account of ourselves in case we are attacked-the gun will speak for itself…I received the "brevet" of sergeant last Saturday…".
