A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 4to., written, on patriotic stationery, by Pvt. James B. Sterling, Co. E, 7th Conn. Vols., [MWIA Olustee, Florida, 2/20/64], St. Augustine, Fl., June 13, 1863, in part: "…the weather is very pleasant here. We have had some of the heaviest showers I ever beheld. The thunder and lightening was enough to kill a man. It was so loud we could not hear ourselves think…it rained so fast that the ground was covered with water some 3 inches deep. The ground is very dry and it did not soak in as fast…but it vanished in a short time…it has not been over 120 above zero yet…that is not very warm for this place. It stood at 110 in the shade. The sea breezes springs up at about 11 o'clock in the fore noon. It is Sunday. The bells are ringing for church…there is 5 churches here aside from the Nigger Churches…there is 3 of those. It is a very cool day. There is a plenty of fish of all kinds…". The original patriotic transmittal cover is included. Overall VG.
