A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written, on patriotic stationery, by Pvt. James B. Sterling, Co. E, 7th Conn. Vols., [MWIA Olustee, Florida, 2/20/64], Fernandina, Fl., Jan. 21, 1863, in part: "…I am now in the state of Florida. We move very often…before I left the Head I and two others were out to a little brook washing some clothes…a lady and gentleman came along on horseback, got rite against us and made the following expression "do you see those poor wretches a washing their clothes. That idd not suit us…so we very politely requested her to dismount and do our washing for us upon which she turned up her nose with distain. The soldiers are thought…about as much…as that by all of the young ladies here. [Those] who came from NY or New haven or some other den of misery…are despised by all of the soldiers…we have much better times than the soldiers on the Potomac. The place whare we now are is a very pretty place. It is situated on the St, Maries River. It is called Fernandina a Spanish name…it was settled by the Spanish…". The original transmittal cover is included. Overall VG
