A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 2pp. 4to., written by Pvt. James B. Sterling, Co. E, 7th Conn. Vols., [MWIA Olustee, Florida, 2/20/64], Fernandina, Fl., Feb. 18, 1863, in part: "…I am to work on the railroad…we have got a railroad with quite a number of cars and one good engine so we are repairing the track. The pay master is at the head…and will be here before long. I expect then I will get my likeness taken. There is an artist here. He is a very good one. They say that the Charleston expedition has blown up. Foster has taken away his troops because…Hunter claimed command of them but…he is to lame for Hunter is a Maj. Gen. Reg. and Foster is a Brigadier Gn. Vol…so it goes. You wrote of Cochrane's son…being at home. I know Robert Cochrane…you stated that it was thought by some that they deserted but if they did…they were smart for [Gov.] Buckingham has set all deserters free now. All who have deserted and have not been arrested are freely discharged from the service. The Army of the Potomac have [not] done [any] fighting because…they took McClellan away from them. So they did a big thing did they not…they will see their folly when it is too late to mend the evil they have done…". The original "Due 3" transmittal cover is included. Overall VG.
