A good Union cavalryman's letter, 2pp. 8vo., written on "The Star-Spangled Banner." stationery printed with full lyrics by Mumford & Co., Cincinnati, by Pvt. Andrew J. Miller, Co. M, 3rd Ohio Cavalry, "Camp Stanley, near Murfreesboro, [Tenn.], April 4, 1863," in part: "Enclosed I send twenty dollars…I could send…more..if it was not so that every thing is so exorbitantly high…we get nothing outside of our rations expect what we buy of sutlers. They charge 40 cents pr lb for cheese, 25 cts for dried beef, 15 cts for a pigs foot, 25 cts for[?] pocket comb. As for tobacco, which you know is one of my luxuries or vices…it goes beyond everything only $3 pr lb and not very good at that, so you see if a person indulges in such things, only occasionally it takes the 'Greenbacks,'…".
