A great war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written, on "Union and Constitution" patriotic stationery, by 1st Sgt. Milton Powers, Co. A, 11th United States Infantry [WIA Wilderness, Va.], "Camp near Potomac Creek, Va., March [20], 1863" to his sister concerning the battle of Kelly's Ford, in part: "…I see no prospect of our being able to move on the enemy…to roads are so heavily muddy that it is almost impossible to get a wagon along…the cavalry had a fight with the enemy three days ago. The fight took place six miles from our camp. It was the greatest cavalry fight that ever occurred on this continent and never but once equalled in Europe. The Rebels were completely beaten. Northern muscle was superior to Southern. The forces were about equal…I have not seen a girl of your age for the last five months. The girls & young boys of Va. keep out of site of the soldiers…direct Milton Powers, 1st Sergt. Co. "A", 2nd Batt. 11th US Infantry, via Washington, D. C. Army of the Potomac…". VG
