A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Andrew H. Frame, Co. A, 35th Mass. Vols., "Newport News, Virginia, Eight miles from Fortress Monroe, Feb. 15, 1863," to his friend Mary Lucy Tenney of Byfield, Mass., in part: "…this place is a beautiful one. It lies at the mouth of the James & York rivers where the Rebel Merrimac had a battle last year with our boats…there lies the two wrecks not more than 200 yards from our camp ground. The Congress was burn[t] and the Cumberland was sunk. When we was at…the city of Fredericksburg we had to pay very high for things we bought there…three dollars a Lb for tobacco and pies 40 cts…writing paper 50 cts for 20 sheets…the government furnishes us with soft bread instead of hard…in this place we can buy good tobacco for 100 dollars a lb…the Army of the Potomac is entirely played out and what will become of it I do not know…now the army are left in the cair of Gen. Hooker and the soldiers have no faith in him…the Army of the Potomac has not doe anything only got the men slaughtered since McClellan has left it. He was much respected in our ranks. He will never return to the army again…we regret his loss…we have no censure for the president in his removal. We know how trying is his position and how fierce are factions around him. He has finally fixed upon a policy which he…honestly believes necessary for the salvation of the country. The men who were opposed to Gen. McClellan are the ones he must rely upon to carry out that policy…". Also included is a transmittal cover addressed: "Mr. Andrew H. Frame, Byfield, Mass." Both VG.
