One page, 15 ¼" x 11" in gilt wooden frame, reading: "Head-Quarters, Frederick City, Md., July 8th, 1863, General Order No. 1. By authority of Major-General French, commanding 3rd Army Corps, U. S. V., the undersigned assumes command of the City of Frederick, Md. All instructions heretofore issued, having reference to Police regulations of the City will continue to be observed until countermanded. Major Cole, Md. Cavalry, will continue to act as Provost Marshal. Marshall Lefferts, Col. 7th Reg't. N.Y.S.T., and Commanding Post." This notice indicates that federal authorities were taking no chances with Southern sympathizers along the Confederate army's retreat route from Gettysburg. An attractive piece of history. Some stains and creases, else very good condition.
