Pair of war-date Union soldier's letters, totaling 8pp. 8vo., written by Sgt. Gustavus B. Williams (signed Gustavus), Co. K, 51st Mass. Vols., Foster Barracks, New Bern, N. C., Feb. 2-5, 1863, in part: "…[Feb. 2]…the expedition of Gen. Foster has now gone…leaving several regiments to hold New Bern and build forts, dig ditches and cut away the woods…so that a few may be able to hold the place against a great army…Gen. Hooker has taken Gen. Burnside's place, the latter resigning…the Capt. takes great pains…to make our Co. do well and appear well…Butler is on the right groundnut and if the Democrats follow him I fear I shall be a Democrat. Must the slavery party take the Republican name?…[Feb. 5, 1863]…the Rebs can hardly besiege us in the present state of the roads. There are no signs…however of their design to do so…". VG
