War-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Sgt. Gustavus B. Williams (signed Gustavus), Co. K, 51st Mass. Vols., New Bern, N. C., Feb. 7, 1863, in part: "…a young manhood recently been discharged from Co. E through the agency of Gov. Andrew. It appearing that on account of his father's death, his presence at home and aid on taking care of the property…were absolutely necessary…if this is true…it is the most promising way for you to cat…apply to Gov. Andrew. Your father will understand how to proceed whether through a Representative or some one of his friends now in office…he must need me and I will gladly go home and assist him…I feel ashamed to claim a discharge on account of deafness which is no more worse than when I came…but…how it interferes with the performance of my duty…".
