War-date Union soldier's letter, 7pp. 8vo., written by Sgt. Gustavus B. Williams (signed Reporter), Co. K, 51st Mass. Vols., New Bern, N. C., Feb.,1863, in part: "It is now more than three weeks since our return from the expedition…Gen. Foster has been here…but has now gone to Washington. The great Expedition is said to be lying off Hilton Head. Its destination is still believed to be Charleston…this war is all for the officers and there's no patriotism outside of the ranks. The lust of power and place is all which keeps army officers here and the people at home…turn to their farms and…[become] forgetful…of those who have gone forth to fight their battles. Such a war is a humbug, a failure, we've no heart in it. Such is camp talk and camp feeling…the surest cure for this is victory in the field, but this is delayed from month to month…disaster meets the army and northern newspapers only darken by their fault finding and forbidding…what under the soldier grows blue…the new fortifications are far advanced towards completion and we believe New Bern safe from attack. Cos. G., F., & B. still do picket duty…". VG
