War-date Union soldier's letter, 2pp. 8vo., written by Sgt. Gustavus B. Williams (signed Gustavus), Co. K, 51st Mass. Vols., Mitchell's Planation, N. C., Feb. 23,1863, in part: "…there is little opportunity for communication with the city. Last night with a dozen or more men I staid down on the river…the guards…on watch were two and a corporal to relieve them…in the night …[we] keep free from our picket posts where if we went carelessly it would be dangerous…the rest of the regiment went…to the picket duty at "Deep Gully" 9 miles from Newbern on the Kinston Road…".
