Group of war-date three (3) Union soldier's letters, totaling 8pp. 8vo., written by Sgt. Gustavus B. Williams (signed Gustavus), Co. K, 51st Mass. Vols., Evan's Mills, N. C., March 19-20,1863, in part: "…the Rebs after reconnoitering our position and trying to capture [?] prisoners without success…they lost over fifty cavalry with horses and equipment…left…down the Neuse …firing on some passing boats once or twice. For some days nothing has been seen or heard of them…they only designed a raid which [would tell] the strength of our force…it ought to be a happy day for the U. S. when they make a real attack on Newbern which is fortified at all points. Our post is a very strong position and we do not anticipate an attack…the negro affair in S. C…was [a] wicked and disobedient conducts and a military blunder. The stripes are received and just as I wanted, thanks…". All overall VG.
