War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Sgt. Gustavus B. Williams (signed Husband), Co. K, 51st Mass. Vols., Evan's Mills, N. C., March 26,1863, in part: "…Lieut. Capron who has been home under orders from headquarters…but really on private business has recently returned and came here with Capt. K….the capt. hurried to the block-house in advance and had the cannon fired to salute him. The salute was repeated at his departure…F. O. Washburn [is] now assistant hospital steward…a regiment of cavalry was pitched out here at first, then infantry and the block house took their place. The rebels are said to be still hovering near us in force…I do not expect to reenlist, but if I could by any means tongue, pen or sword make these proslavery fools or traitors as many of them are…I would sacrifice much…our surgeons and chaplain have their headquarters at Beaufort…many will reenlist…but scores of fools are raging here…"Damn the Nigger." It is all any one can say…I trust most of Mass. men wish to fight…".
