War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Sgt. Gustavus B. Williams (signed Husband & G.), Co. K, 51st Mass. Vols., Evan's Mills, N. C., April 2,1863, in part: "…the enemy have attacked Washington some forty miles away where [there] is a fort and 21 cannon also the 27 and (44 Mass. Regiment). The firing has been heard here…reinforcements and gun boats have been sent and Gen. Foster has gone there. Rumors a[re] rife that the place has been taken…our men have built a very strong earthwork for protection…nothing but artillery would easily rout us…Edward writes he is about to visit the Army of the Potomac or Rosecrans as a kind of missionary…he will be absent seven or eight weeks…will preach and distribute reading matter…under the auspices of some society to do something which the army chaplains ought to have done. Many of those…are deplorable failures…perhaps he will succeed. Preaching and books will be eagerly welcomed…". VG
