Pair of war-date Union soldier's letters, totaling 6pp. 8vo., written by Sgt. Gustavus B. Williams (one signed Husband & the other Gustavus), Co. K, 51st Mass. Vols., Evan's Mills, N. C., April 4,1863, in part: "…Lieut. Howe is not, at present, very unpopular…the men generally seem to dislike any commander when there's no other reason…Mrs. McCann has written to Capt. K. demanding here husband's body…its unlikely he will be "boxed up."…the firing of great guns near Washington is heard occasionally…the place is hardly worth fighting for…Gen. Foster has not returned…Foster is said to have sent for 14,000 troops to reinforce the 18th Army Corps. He is reported to have said he could hold Washington 15 days…".
