Pair of war-date Union soldier's letters, totaling 5pp. 8vo., written by Sgt. Gustavus B. Williams (one signed Gustavus and the other signed Gustavus B. Williams), Co. K, 51st Mass. Vols., Evan's Mills, N. C., April 19-20,1863, in part: "…Gen. Foster was reinforced by troops which safely ran the blockade…and the returning boat brought back Gen. Foster to Newbern who put the available force under marching orders at once and was soon off after the Rebels who were reported to have left Washington on learning the Gen's reinforcements and departure. The expedition after them is not yet returned. Charleston news looks bad "Hunter stopped DuPont who was certain to have captured Charleston without him…Hunter failed called DuPont to renew the attack. The latter declined to fight under his orders and has gone to Washington." So Charleston is safe through the folly of Generals. Oh this war! Isn't it all lost? Who is honest? What officer cares for anything but spoils? Hunter is likely to be wrong. DuPont is certainly and the country sacrificed…". VG
